So yesterday we tested our vital capacities... and it was proven that i have very large lungs for a girl my age. My vital capacity hit 4.5 litres or 4500cc.This is way above average for a girl my age because the average is 2. It is even higher then the male average of 4. My vital capacity was the highest of the girls in my class. I believe that my vital capacity was so high because I am tall and I play the alto and tenor saxophones. I think that a lot of people have lower capacities because they might be a bit shorter or not exercise their lungs as much as I do. The typical amount of air exhaled is only half a litre. Our average breaths do not use our full vital capacity because it would take too much energy to take deep breaths constantly. To exhale forcefully is different from the normal exhale because when normally exhaling it is used to rid the body of carbon dioxide and oxygenize the brain. Meanwhile forcefully exhaling is only a test of the lungs capacity and is not required for the normal breath. Playing an instrument has helped my lungs to have a higher lung capacity because I take large breaths while playing therefore increasing my lung capacity. General exercise would allow for a larger lung capacity because you are using your lungs to their full capacity . Its just like exercising any other muscle in your body, the more you use it the stronger it gets!
